Virginia Beach, VA (August 19, 2021) – Officers with the Virginia Beach Police Department say that a man was killed and two other people were injured in a car crash that occurred on South Independence Boulevard in Virginia Beach Wednesday evening, August 18.

The VBPD said that right before 6:30 p.m., dispatchers received a report that two cars crashed in the 1800 block of South Independence Blvd at the intersection with Windsor Oaks Boulevard.

Initial reports released by investigators think that a red sedan traveling northbound on Independence Boulevard tried turning left onto Windsor Oaks Boulevard against oncoming traffic. As it turned, the driver of a gray sedan going southbound struck its passenger side.

The driver and two passengers in the red sedan were transported to an area medical center for serious injuries. Police said the driver, identified as 81-year-old Ramon Luis Santiago, died at the hospital three and a half hours later.

The driver of the gray sedan wasn’t hurt and stayed at the scene to cooperate with authorities.

The crash remains under investigation.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Ramon Santiago. Our thoughts are with the injured victims in hopes of a full recovery.

Car Accident Fatalities in Virginia

Each year, hundreds of people are killed in traffic-related incidents throughout the commonwealth of Virginia. Although these accidents are often preventable, we are forced to witness the overwhelming consequences families are forced to endure.

Hundreds of victims are rushed to area hospitals after their accidents where they have to undergo emergency medical treatment and spend days or even weeks in recovery. Victims often require therapy for their injuries, which is time-consuming and costly. Unfortunately, not every accident victim is able to recover.

In many cases, the negligent or reckless actions of others are the cause of the accidents. Statistics show that more than 80% of accidents are caused by drivers who are texting, talking on their phones, impaired, or engaging in reckless behaviors while operating their vehicles.

When people sustain serious injuries in accidents caused by the actions of other motorists or even lose their lives as a result of these incidents, their families should reach out to an accident attorney in VA Beach, Virginia as soon as possible. Families may be entitled to compensation to help alleviate the financial burdens they face moving forward.
