Norfolk, VA – Woman Dies, Two Hurt in Two-Car Accident on I-64 at Granby St

Written by: Virginia Beach Injury Law

Norfolk, VA (September 15, 2021) – A two-vehicle accident left at least one person dead early Wednesday morning, September 15, in the Norfolk area.

Virginia State Police say they responded to the westbound lanes of Interstate 64, west of Granby Street, around 2:30 a.m., according to a department spokesperson.

The two-vehicle accident occurred inside the safety work zone area. Shortly before officers arrived on the scene, the driver of a 2006 Ford Fusion made a sudden lane change, ran off the right side of the roadway, and hit the jersey wall.

The driver, identified only as an adult male, then overcorrected back into the left lane and collided with a Sweeper Truck, coming to rest underneath the truck. The driver of the sweeper truck suffered minor injuries. EMS took the driver of the Ford Fusion to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. A female passenger traveling in the Fusion died on impact.

Authorities closed the westbound lanes of I-64 for about five hours during the course of their investigation.

The Virginia State Police Crash Team is still piecing together the events leading up to the wreck.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased victim. Our thoughts are with the injured victims in hopes of a full recovery.

Deadly Car Accidents in Norfolk

Thousands of people have been killed in traffic-related incidents throughout the commonwealth of Virginia in the last five years. And although most of these accidents are preventable, families must still endure overwhelming consequences.

Hundreds of victims are rushed to area hospitals after their accidents. Oftentimes, they have to undergo emergency medical treatment and spend days or even weeks in recovery. Furthermore, victims often require time-consuming, costly therapy for their injuries. Unfortunately, not every accident victim is able to recover.

In many cases, the negligent or reckless actions of others are the cause of the accidents. Statistics show that more than 80% of accidents are caused by drivers who are distracted. Whether a driver is texting, impaired, or engaging in other reckless behaviors, they contribute to the majority of deadly crashes.

When people lose their lives as a result of these incidents, their families should reach out to an accident attorney in Virginia Beach. Families may find they’re entitled to compensation to alleviate their financial burdens.
